Hearing on Zakia Jafri’s plea deferred till April 11

Gujarat high court on Thursday adjourned till April 11 hearing on Zakia Jafri’s petition challenging lower court’s decision upholding the Supreme Court-appointed SIT’s clean chit to chief minister Narendra Modi and others in the 2002 riots.Justice S G Shah put off the hearing after the state government sought time to study the voluminous petition.

Zakia, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, has demanded that Modi and 57 other politicians, bureaucrats and top police officers should be booked on charges of conspiracy, mass arson, rape, tampering with evidence and destroying valuable records of the Gujarat home department. On December 26, 2013, metropolitan magistrate B J Ganatra had turned down Zadia’s protest petition against SIT’s closure report, saying that there was no prosecutable evidence against Modi and others. SIT had probed this issue on the SC’s instance on the basis of Zakia complaint first filed in 2006 before the Gujarat police.
