Following inspections ordered by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel after recent bridge collapses, the state has closed a total of 36 bridges (out of over 2,100 on the Narmada canal network) for urgent repairs. Of these, 5 have been completely shut to all traffic, and 4 have been restricted only to light vehicles.
Additionally, the CM revealed that out of roughly 100 bridges deemed unsafe during statewide audits, some have already been closed, including bridge “97” (along with the others) as part of this precautionary process. These closures are precautionary, part of a rapid response to potential structural failures—aimed at preventing another Gambhira-type collapse. Especially for bridge 97, closure is a safety-first measure until it can be inspected and restored.
