The Gujarat government has decided to provide Z category security cover to two suspended IPS officers DG Vanzara and PP Pandey, both accused in fake encounter cases. Both Vanzara and Pandey are currently lodged in Sabarmati jail.S K Nanda, additional chief secretary (home), told the duo’s security was reviewed recently. “The armed officials and personnel provided by the state police will accompany them in Gujarat and elsewhere,” he said.Vanzara, suspended from the position of DIG in April 2007 after his arrest, is an accused in fake encounters of Ishrat Jahan and others, Tulsiram Prajapati and Sohrabuddin Shaikh. Pandey, suspended from the position of ADGP in August 2013, is named in fake encounter case of Ishrat and others.The suspended cops will now be provided two police sub-inspectors, four head constables and 10 constables round the clock behind the bars.
Vanzara was shifted to Taloja jail in Maharastra from Sabarmati prison in November 2012 after the trial in Sohrabuddin case was transferred out of Gujarat. He was shifted back to the Ahmedabad prison in June 2013 after being named as an accused in the Ishrat case.In September 2013, Vanzara wrote an explosive letter to additional chief secretary of state home department targetting Amit Shah, former junior home minister and a co-accused in Sohrabuddin case. He had even expressed his disappointment with chief minister Narendra Modi, whom he referred to as ‘God’, for not backing the jailed officers for the sake of Shah’s political ambitions. Pandey has been lodged at Sabarmati jail since his arrest in August 2013.
