The LD engg college principal was top contender for the post. LD College of Engineering Principal M N Patel has been appointed the vice chancellor of Gujarat University. Patel, who has been appointed for a term of three years, will take charge today.The post was lying vacant since Adesh Pal’s unceremonious exit amid allegations of corruption six months ago. Patel, who has more than three decades of experience as academician, was the Dean of Faculty of technology including engineering of Gujarat University from 2005 to 2009.He was also a senate member and member of Academic Council. His efficiency and capacity to work ceaselessly for the academic community saw him being entrusted with overall responsibility of Gujarat Technological University (GTU) as its incharge vice chancellor from March 2009 to June 2010.
Following the appointment of Akshai Aggarwal as the vice chancellor of GTU, Patel has played a supportive role and taken over responsibility as the member secretary of Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC).Patel commenting on his appointment said, “This appointment is a great honour. I have been working with GU for past 15 years. I know the workings of the university and its staff. I hope the staff and students support me in my new journey. My aim will be to provide the best possible education to the students of this university.”However, Patel was cautious and added, “Don’t expect any changes overnight. There is a need to bring about some changes and it will be a gradual process. It will require equal participation by the university staff and the students.” Patel was at a training programme at IIT Kanpur when the announcement was made.
