The rally was for actor-turned-politician Vijay, under his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The location was Veluswamypuram, Karur in Tamilnadu, on a stretch along the Karur–Erode highway.
The stampede occurred around 7:30–7:45 PM IST as the crowd surged toward the stage/bus.
The event had earlier been granted permission (officially) for a turnout starting 3 PM. However, the crowd had begun gathering much earlier (reports mention people arriving by 10 AM onward) in expectation of Vijay’s arrival.
Vijay’s arrival was delayed by several hours, which is believed to have aggravated crowd restlessness and density.
