Ahmedabad: Barely five years after its construction, the joint extension of the Income Tax Bridge in Ahmedabad has reportedly broken, triggering serious safety concerns among commuters and residents. The incident has once again brought the city’s infrastructure quality under scrutiny, with citizens calling it “another risky bridge after the Subhash Bridge.”

According to local reports and visuals shared by commuters, the damaged joint extension has created a visible gap and uneven surface on the bridge, posing a significant risk to daily traffic, especially two-wheelers, pedestrians, and public transport vehicles. The Income Tax Bridge is a key arterial route connecting major parts of the city and witnesses heavy traffic throughout the day.

Residents and regular commuters have expressed alarm that a bridge constructed just around five years ago is already showing signs of structural failure. Many have questioned the quality of construction, materials used, and maintenance practices followed by the authorities.
“This bridge is used by thousands of people every day. If such damage appears within a few years, it is extremely dangerous. After the Subhash Bridge issues, this is yet another warning sign,” said a local commuter.
Following the incident, citizens have urged the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and concerned departments to immediately inspect the bridge, carry out urgent repairs, and conduct a comprehensive safety audit of all major bridges in the city. Experts have also emphasized the need for periodic structural assessments to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.
As of now, there has been no official statement detailing the cause of the damage or the timeline for permanent repairs. However, the incident has intensified public demand for accountability, transparency, and stricter quality control in urban infrastructure projects.
The breaking of the Income Tax Bridge joint extension serves as a reminder that infrastructure safety cannot be compromised, especially in a rapidly growing city like Ahmedabad, where bridges play a critical role in daily mobility.
