The budget session of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly has commenced in Gandhinagar, marking the start of legislative work for the year. The session is scheduled to run from February 16 to March 25, 2026, during which the state government will present and discuss the 2026-27 budget, key bills and public issues.

The session began with an address by Governor Acharya Devvrat, who highlighted the state’s development initiatives, including technology-led growth, agricultural support and infrastructure projects. He emphasized strengthening Gujarat’s role in development while bridging tradition and modern progress.
In his address to the Assembly, the Governor also announced that the state has paid Rs 9,610 crore in crop damage compensation to over 33 lakh farmers affected by unseasonal rains. He stressed continued focus on tech adoption, natural farming and socio-economic welfare.
On the first day of the session, Purnesh Modi was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly by a voice vote. Backed by the ruling party’s strong majority, he secured the position ahead of opposition nominee Shailesh Parmar.
As the session started, the Indian National Congress organised a ‘Jan Akrosh Sabha’ (People’s Anger Rally) in Gandhinagar, raising issues such as farmers’ distress, unemployment, and policy concerns. Leaders demanded attention to public grievances coinciding with the Assembly’s opening.
Reports also indicate that attention is on debates over various bills, including proposed legal reforms and amendments to state.
