The tenure of the current elected body of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), including the mayor and all corporators, is set to conclude on March 9, 2026. With the completion of the term and municipal elections yet to be scheduled, the civic body will temporarily function under an appointed administrator.

According to an order issued by the Government of Gujarat, senior IAS officer Mukesh Kumar has been appointed as the administrator of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. The decision has been taken under the provisions of Section 7A(1)(ii) of the relevant municipal law, considering the current administrative situation.

Officials stated that elections could not be conducted before the end of the term due to ongoing administrative priorities, including Special Intensive Revision (SIR) related work and the ongoing board examinations across the state.

As per the notification, Mukesh Kumar, IAS, who currently serves as Additional Chief Secretary in the Higher and Technical Education Department at the Secretariat in Gandhinagar, will assume charge as administrator of the civic body from March 10, 2026.

The administrator will oversee the functioning and management of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation until new corporators are elected in the upcoming municipal elections. During this interim period, the administrator will be responsible for ensuring continuity in civic services, governance, and ongoing development works across the city.
