Ahmedabad: The Gujarati music and film industry is mourning the death of veteran music composer, singer and arranger Gaurang Vyas, who passed away at the age of 87. His demise marks the end of an important era in Gujarati music.
The son of legendary and Padma Shri awardee Avinash Vyas, Gaurang Vyas carried forward his family’s rich musical legacy while establishing a distinct identity of his own. Over several decades, he made significant contributions to Gujarati cinema, folk music and sugam sangeet.
Gaurang Vyas composed music for more than 100 Gujarati films. Some of his notable works include Bhavni Bhavai, Lakho Fulani, Maniyaro, Parki Thapan and Liludi Dharati.
His compositions became an integral part of Gujarati cultural life. Songs such as “Dikri To Parki Thapan Kevay”, sung by Lata Mangeshkar, continue to hold a special emotional place among Gujarati families. He also worked with legendary singers including Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey.
Apart from film music, Gaurang Vyas made a lasting contribution to Gujarati garba, bhajans and sugam sangeet. His musical creations, including “Maniyaro Te Halu Halu Thai Re” and “Lakh Lakh Divda,” remain popular among music lovers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the passing of Gaurang Vyas, remembering his valuable contribution to Gujarati music and culture.
With the demise of Gaurang Vyas, Gujarat has lost one of its most influential musical voices. However, his timeless melodies and extraordinary contribution to Gujarati culture will continue to inspire generations to come.
