Shardiya Navratri 2026: Nine Nights of Maa Durga, Devotion, Garba and Dandiya

Shardiya Navratri 2026, the major autumn festival dedicated to Goddess Durga, will be celebrated from October 11 to October 20, 2026, with Vijayadashami (Dussehra) falling on October 20.

The festival begins with Ghatasthapana or Kalash Sthapana, the sacred ritual of installing a pot symbolising Goddess Shakti. Devotees perform prayers and rituals to invoke the blessings of Maa Durga and mark the beginning of nine days of spiritual devotion.

Navratri, meaning “nine nights,” is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga in her nine forms, collectively known as the Navadurgas. Each form represents distinct virtues and spiritual qualities, inspiring devotees to embrace courage, purity, wisdom and inner strength.

The festival is celebrated through devotional songs, prayers, fasting, temple visits and community gatherings. Its central message is the triumph of good over evil and the renewal of faith, strength and righteousness.

Garba and Dandiya-Raas remain among the biggest attractions of Navratri, particularly in Gujarat and Gujarati communities across India and abroad. Garba is traditionally performed in circular formations around a lamp or an image of the Goddess, while Dandiya-Raas features rhythmic movements with decorated wooden sticks. Cities across Gujarat come alive with vibrant dance events, traditional attire, music and festive enthusiasm.

Devotees worship the different forms of Maa Durga, chant mantras, perform pujas and offer bhog according to religious traditions. Many observe fasts, while homes and temples are cleaned and decorated to welcome the Goddess.

Each day of Navratri is associated with a particular form of the Goddess, and many devotees follow the traditional colours assigned to the nine days by wearing corresponding attire. These customs add to the festival’s spiritual significance and cultural vibrancy.

From traditional rituals and devotional offerings to spectacular Garba nights, Shardiya Navratri 2026 celebrates India’s rich cultural heritage, devotion to Maa Durga and the enduring victory of good over evil.
