Director: Rohit Dhawan

Cast: John Abraham, Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Akshaye Khanna and Saqib Saleem.

Ratings: 3 stars/ 5 stars

Rohit Dhawan’s second directorial film Dishoom is being touted as an action-adventure film. Featuring John Abraham, Varun Dhawan and Jacqueline Fernandez in the lead, the film narrates the story of two cops who are on a mission to rescue Indian cricket team’s star player who has been kidnapped. There is a star cricketer from the Indian National team missing before a crucial match yet the cops entrusted with finding him in a 36 hours chase have the time to slip into their swimwear and strut around swgging it out like no one’s business. A drug addict on the rehab trail has skills of a military assasin.

Rohit Dhawan’s debut film Desi Boyz received mix response at the box office. Dhawan collaborates second time round with John Abraham in Dishoom. The film also marks the comeback of Akshaye Khanna who has been on a sabbatical for some time. Khanna reportedly plays an antagonist in the film. A paunchy out of work hero is back as a villain, and then there is the mother of all man buns making a special appearance on Akshay kumars head. So much is off the kilt with Rohit Dhawan’s Dishoom that if it werent for the over dose of swagger and style, the film would have been unbearable.
Dishoom also boasts of interesting cameos. From Akshay Kumar to Nargis Fakhri to Saqib Saleem, Director Rohit Dhawan manages to rope in some well known faces in the film. Dishoom paces itself fast, thankfully, has a good sprinkling og street side smart assery that comes easily to Varun Dhawan. A few good songs here, a lot of good bodies all over and Rohit Dhawan is good to go in his attempt to establish himself as this era’s David Dhawan.

Both John Abraham and Varun Dhawan carry off the film superbly. John Abraham, after many false starts to his career where he wants to play the tough guy, gets it all sorted out in Dishoom and his ‘jugalbandi’ with the spectacular Varun Dhawan. It is guaranteed to bring many people to their feet. Varun has already a number of serious films under his belt and Dishoom will add comedy to that as one of the many things he excels at – his timing, face-play and execution of the comic parts are worth watching again and again The man is well on the way to stardom. Another good performance in the film is surprisingly by Jacqueline Fernandez. While she is supposed to be eye candy in Dishoom, sort of a side dish, she nevertheless manages to carry off her role very well without messing up in any way. Does not look artificial or stone-faced, something that she has been accused of doing.

Action capers like this needn’t always be rooted in sense and logic, yet Dishoom takes taking cinematic liberties too seriosuly. So as long as physics, gravity or common sense do not come in your way, the costlist stunt scene in the land – a weird unnecessary helicopter chase- will get your attention. So will all the bromance on display. Dishoom is all swagger and no substance.
