Bharat Ratna to Dhyan Chand; government clarifies

Central government has clarified on Bharat Ratna to Late Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Champion from India. Government do not invite nominations for Bharat Ratna.However recommendations have been forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Office. Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State in Lok Sabha favoured Dhyan Chand’s getting Bharat Ratna in Parliament.

Hockey champion Dhyan Chand was Born in 1905. He earned the moniker of ‘Hockey Wizard’ for his superb skills and ball control. He won three Olympic gold medals for India between 1928 and 1936.

Dhyan Chand retired from the game in 1948 and was awarded the the Padma Bhushan eight years later. He retired from the Indian Army with the rank of Major and passed away in New Delhi in 1979 at the age of 79.
