Ahmedabad’s IKDRC-ITS Sets National Record with 500 Kidney Transplants in 2025

Ahmedabad Institute Sets National Record with 500 Kidney Transplants in 2025 (Ahmedabad, December 31, 2025) — The Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre & Urology Hospital (IKDRC-ITS) at Ahmedabad Civil Medical College has made history by completing 500 kidney transplants in a single year, establishing a new national benchmark in the public healthcare sector. According to official figures released by the Gujarat government’s Health Department, IKDRC-ITS achieved this milestone by December 30, 2025, surpassing its previous annual count. With this feat, the institute has become the only public sector hospital in India to reach the 500-transplant mark in a single year — a testament to its expansive capabilities and commitment to affordable, high-quality care.

In 2025 alone, the centre conducted a diverse range of transplant procedures:

  • 157 cadaver (deceased donor) transplants
  • 90 kidney swap transplants
  • 49 paediatric transplants
  • 43 robotic-assisted transplant surgeries
These advanced procedures highlight the institute’s expertise in complex and specialised medical care.

Of the 500 transplant recipients, 367 were men and 133 were women. While the majority — 330 patients — were from Gujarat, 170 recipients came from other Indian states, underscoring IKDRC-ITS’s reputation as a healthcare destination for patients nationwide.

A large portion of the transplants were conducted under government-supported schemes aimed at expanding access to life-saving treatment.

  • 318 procedures were performed under the PM-JAY (Ayushman Bharat) health insurance scheme.
  • Additional beneficiaries included students under the School Health Programme, SC and ST category patients, CAPF personnel, and CGHS beneficiaries.

This emphasis on affordability and equity highlights the institute’s role as a beacon of hope for economically disadvantaged patients.

IKDRC-ITS operates 24×7 throughout the year, even during major festivals, ensuring continuous availability of critical transplant services. The institute’s success has been supported by sustained guidance and strategic direction from the Gujarat government’s Health Department and state leadership, including Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. Healthcare analysts say the achievement reflects both growing awareness about organ donation and advancements in surgical technology and post-operative care, positioning Ahmedabad as a centre of excellence in kidney transplantation.
