Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially invited Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi to attend the 51st G7 Summit, scheduled during June 15–17, 2025, in Kananaskis, Alberta. This invitation comes amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between Canada and India following the 2023 assassination of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia, an incident Canadian authorities have linked to elements within the Indian government. Despite these strains, Carney emphasized India’s significant role in global economic discussions, stating that including India “made sense” given its status as the world’s 5th-largest economy and its centrality to global supply chains. PM Modi has accepted the invitation, expressing a commitment to work collaboratively with Canada based on mutual respect and shared interests. The invitation has drawn criticism from Sikh advocacy groups, who take it as a betrayal in light of the ongoing investigation into Nijjar’s death. The summit will also feature leaders from other G7 nations, including U.S. President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and invited guests such as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
