Gandhinagar: In a significant move aimed at strengthening GIFT City’s position as a global financial and business hub, the Gujarat government has relaxed liquor consumption rules within the GIFT City area, easing long-standing restrictions in the dry state.
As per the revised norms, non-resident Indian visitors and foreign nationals are no longer required to obtain a liquor permit to consume alcohol at licensed hotels and restaurants operating inside GIFT City. Visitors can now be served liquor upon producing a valid government-issued photo identity, simplifying access for business travelers and tourists.
The government has also expanded the permitted consumption zones. Alcohol can now be served not only in designated dining areas but also in lawns, poolside spaces and terrace areas of licensed hospitality establishments within GIFT City, offering greater flexibility to hotels and event venues.
For employees working in GIFT City, liquor access permits will continue to apply. However, the rules have been further eased, allowing permit holders to host up to 25 guests at a time at authorised venues, a move expected to support corporate networking and international delegations.
Officials clarified that Gujarat’s prohibition law remains fully in force across the state, and the relaxation applies exclusively to GIFT City, which enjoys special regulatory status due to its international financial services role. All liquor service must strictly adhere to licensing conditions, age restrictions and operational guidelines.
The decision is seen as part of the state government’s broader strategy to make GIFT City more competitive with global financial centres by improving lifestyle and hospitality infrastructure, thereby attracting multinational firms, global professionals and international events.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, stating that the revised policy will enhance ease of doing business and improve the overall experience for global investors and visitors coming to India’s flagship financial hub.
