Kharge’s ‘Illiterate Gujaratis’ Remark Sparks Row BJP’s Jagdish Vishwakarma Hits Back Hard

Ahmedabad/Gandhinagar: A major political controversy has erupted after Mallikarjun Kharge allegedly referred to Gujaratis as “illiterate” during a public address, triggering sharp reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat.

Reacting strongly, Gujarat BJP President Jagdish Vishwakarma condemned the statement, calling it a direct insult to the people of Gujarat. In an official response, Vishwakarma said that such remarks reflect the mindset of the Congress leadership and are unacceptable.

He asserted that Gujarat is a land known for its rich legacy, entrepreneurial spirit, and contribution to nation-building. Targeting the Congress, he stated that insulting six crore Gujaratis shows “disrespect towards the pride and identity of the state.”

According to party sources, Vishwakarma emphasized that Gujaratis have consistently demonstrated their capabilities across sectors—business, education, and governance—and such comments undermine their achievements.

The controversy stems from a recent speech by Kharge during a political rally, where his remarks about Gujaratis sparked outrage among BJP leaders and supporters. Reports indicate that several BJP leaders, including state leadership, have termed the comment as an attack on Gujarat’s dignity and self-respect.

The BJP has demanded an apology from Kharge, while also using the issue to politically target the Congress ahead of upcoming elections. The party claims that such statements will further alienate voters in Gujarat.

The development has intensified the ongoing political confrontation between the BJP and Congress, with both sides engaging in sharp exchanges over leadership, governance, and regional pride.
