Mahashivratri 2026 Celebrated with Fervour in India and abroad

New Delhi, February 15, 2026: Devotees across India are celebrating Maha Shivaratri with immense spiritual enthusiasm, as temples witness heavy footfall, night-long prayers, and elaborate security arrangements to manage the surge of pilgrims.

Lakhs of devotees began queuing outside prominent Shiva temples from early morning, observing fasts (vrat), performing abhishek rituals, and participating in night-long jagran ceremonies dedicated to Lord Shiva. Authorities in several states have deployed additional police forces and implemented traffic diversions to ensure smooth celebrations.

In Maharashtra, entry into the sanctum sanctorum of the historic Grishneshwar Temple has been restored ahead of the festival, allowing devotees closer access for prayers. The move comes as part of special arrangements to facilitate the large influx of pilgrims visiting the revered Jyotirlinga shrine.

Security has been tightened in key pilgrimage centres including Prayagraj, where lakhs of devotees gathered for holy dips and temple visits. Mobile squads, surveillance teams, and crowd-control mechanisms have been deployed to prevent any untoward incidents.

Several states have issued advisories regarding traffic management, public safety, and medical emergency preparedness as the celebrations continue late into the night.

Devotees are observing strict fasting rituals, consuming fruits and milk while refraining from grains and salt. Temples across the country are adorned with flowers and illuminated with decorative lighting, creating a vibrant spiritual atmosphere. Cultural programs, devotional music, and religious discourses are also being organized in many cities.

Mahashivratri, one of the most significant Hindu festivals, symbolizes the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva and is believed to be the night when Shiva performs the divine Tandava. The festival continues through the night, culminating in early morning prayers and offerings.

Authorities have urged devotees to follow safety guidelines and cooperate with local administrations to ensure peaceful and orderly celebrations.
