On September 6, 2025, a catastrophic accident occurred near the Pavagadh Hill (Shaktipeeth) in Panchmahal district, Gujarat, when a cargo ropeway cable snapped, causing a trolley loaded with construction materials to fall. Six individuals were killed in the incident.
According to various reports, the victims included two lift operators, two workers (labourers), and two others present on board at the time of the incident.
The accident happened at approximately 3:30 pm, and the impact was near the first tower/base point of the ropeway. Rescue teams, including police and fire brigade, responded swiftly, and the bodies were recovered and sent for post-mortem examinations.
A special committee, appointed by the district Collector and including technical experts, has been formed to investigate the causes of the cable failure. The government is awaiting a preliminary report to determine the next steps and whether any negligence or administrative lapses occurred.
This tragedy has drawn widespread sorrow and prompted concern over the safety protocols of such ropeway systems, especially considering that the Pavagadh ropeway had experienced a deadly mishap in 2003, when seven people were killed in a similar accident.
