Ahmedabad Police’s Hawk Squad to nab Gangsters Looting Passengers at ST Stand & Railway Station

It looks like Ahmedabad Police had a unit called the “Hawk Squad”, primarily as a Mobile Bike-Patrolling Team (nicknamed after the bird of prey) rather than a detective or “encounter” team targeting gangsters. During festivals like Diwali, Ahmedabad Traffic Police deployed Hawk bike patrol teams across crime-prone areas including Vastrapur, Satellite, Maninagar, Ghatlodia, Sola and more. Some squad member will be in civil dress and some in uniform available at both the places inside and outside for prevention of crime with passenger at ST bus stand and railway station. The step by police has been taken with increasing number of complaints of looting passengers at ST stand and railway station.

These plain- and uniformed officers rode bikes in shifts to deter chain-snatchers, burglars, and fast-moving street gangs operating on two-wheelers. This unit functioned more as a preventive rapid-response patrol team, using mobility to counter opportunist gangs and street-level thieves—not as a covert or specialized squad aimed at organized crime. Previously Ahmedabad Police had special squads linked to each zone and sector, comprising sub-inspectors and constables aimed at gang detection and serious incident investigations. However, these squads were later disbanded due to ineffectiveness and rising crime rates. Some zones retained active squads, but many units were merged or dissolved.
