Ahmedabad, Gujarat: Serious concerns have emerged across Gujarat as workers and employees under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) have reportedly not received their wages for the past 5–6 months. The delay has triggered widespread anger and raised questions over administrative efficiency and fund management.
The situation is particularly severe in regions such as Una and Gir Gadhada, where workers and staff are facing acute financial hardships. Many families dependent on these wages are struggling to meet daily expenses.
According to Rakeshkumar, President of the All Gujarat MGNREGA Employees Union, despite regular work being carried out under the scheme, payments have been pending for several months across the state. He alleged that inefficiencies in government procedures and poor fund management are the primary reasons behind the delay.
The non-payment of wages has forced many workers to borrow money for survival, worsening their financial condition. The crisis is especially impacting rural areas, where MGNREGA serves as a crucial source of livelihood.
The union has demanded immediate clearance of pending wages and called for a streamlined system to prevent such delays in the future. It has also warned of a statewide protest if the government fails to act promptly.
