April 18, 2026 In a strong address to the nation, Narendra Modi expressed regret after the Women’s Reservation Bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha. The Prime Minister apologized to the women of India and sharply criticized opposition parties for blocking what he described as a transformative reform.
PM Modi said that despite sincere efforts, the bill could not be passed. He apologized to the “mothers and sisters of the country,” emphasizing that for his government, national interest comes first, while accusing some parties of prioritizing political gains over women’s welfare.
He targeted parties like Indian National Congress, DMK, Trinamool Congress, and Samajwadi Party, alleging they celebrated the bill’s defeat in Parliament. Modi described their actions as a “grave wrongdoing” and said the public would hold them accountable.
The Prime Minister stated that rejecting the bill was an attack on the dignity and aspirations of millions of women. He added that such behavior reflects a mindset that underestimates the power of women in modern India.
Modi warned that the opposition’s “celebration” of the bill’s failure would cost them politically, as women voters are closely watching and will respond in future elections.
He further accused opposition parties of disrespecting the spirit of the Constitution’s framers, who envisioned equal rights and representation for women.
The Women’s Reservation Bill aimed to provide greater political representation to women by reserving seats in legislative bodies. However, it failed to secure enough support in the Lok Sabha, highlighting deep political divisions on the issue.
PM Modi’s address combined an emotional appeal to women with a strong political message against the opposition, signaling that the issue of women’s representation will remain a key point of contention in the country’s political discourse.
