Gujarat is set to begin the long-awaited population census process, which is being conducted after a gap of 15 years. Usually held every 10 years, the last census in India took place in 2011.
According to officials, the census will be conducted in two phases across 17 municipal corporations and 34 districts in the state with the support of more than 1.10 lakh staff members.
Sujal Mayatra stated that the first phase will involve house listing and housing census, scheduled from May 17 to May 31. During this phase, details related to houses and households will be collected.
The second phase, which will focus on population enumeration, will begin from June and continue with detailed population counting in February next year.
Citizens will also have the option of self-enumeration through an online portal, allowing them to submit their information digitally. Officials said that around 33 questions will be asked during the census process, including four new questions added since the 2011 census.
Authorities emphasized that extensive training is being provided to ensure accurate data collection and to avoid excessive burden on government employees involved in the exercise.
The census is considered crucial for future planning, welfare schemes, infrastructure development, and policy decisions at both state and national levels.
