The recent controversy over alleged donation theft at the Ram Mandir has renewed attention on a similar case from Gujarat’s famous Ambaji Temple. An old CCTV video of the incident has resurfaced on social media, drawing widespread public interest.
According to the investigation, the theft took place inside the temple’s strongroom during the counting of cash collected from devotees’ donation boxes. CCTV footage allegedly shows an outsourced employee, Chirag Thakor, secretly hiding a bundle of currency notes beneath his foot while counting cash alongside other staff members.
Officials said the incident came to light on May 5, when Thakor attempted to leave the counting area, claiming he needed to use the restroom. As he walked away, a bundle containing ₹1.04 lakh reportedly slipped from his pocket, alerting fellow employees. The staff immediately informed senior authorities, leading to his detention.
Further investigation revealed the alleged involvement of two more individuals, Vivek Sharma and Nikunj Patel. Police subsequently arrested both suspects in connection with the case.
The resurfaced CCTV footage has once again sparked discussions about the need for stricter security measures and greater transparency in handling donations at major religious institutions across the country.
