Ahmedabad: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, the Ahmedabad Police have integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the management of the 149th Jagannath Rath Yatra, aiming to enhance law and order, improve coordination, and streamline deployment during one of Gujarat’s largest religious processions.

Around 4,500 police personnel deployed for the Rath Yatra bandobast will receive AI-assisted guidance throughout their duty. The police have uploaded the names, deployment details, and duty data of personnel into an AI-powered system integrated with ChatGPT. By simply entering or speaking their register number, police personnel can instantly access details such as their assigned location, reporting time, responsibilities, and other operational instructions.

Officials said the AI system is designed to reduce confusion, improve communication, and ensure quick access to deployment information in the field.
In addition to assisting personnel, Ahmedabad Police will also use AI-enabled facial recognition and surveillance systems capable of identifying wanted criminals and suspicious individuals within large crowds, further strengthening security arrangements during the procession.
Police officials believe this marks the first known use of AI technology in India for comprehensive management of a large-scale religious procession, combining personnel assistance with intelligent surveillance to make the Rath Yatra safer and more efficiently managed.
