“Nana” No More ; Veteran Actor Nana Patekar Died at 75

PM Narendra Modi pays tribute to legendary actor through his official Twitter(X) handle

Mumbai/Goa: Veteran actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar, one of Indian cinema’s most distinctive and powerful performers, passed away at the age of 75 on Thursday, October 8, 2026. He died in Goa after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Patekar was found unresponsive at his residence in Dona Paula in the early hours of Thursday. He was subsequently taken to a private hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him. According to hospital authorities, medical teams performed CPR for around 45 minutes, but he could not be revived. A medico-legal case was registered and a post-mortem examination was ordered to establish the exact cause of death.

A Powerful Voice of Indian Cinema

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra, Nana Patekar began his artistic journey through Marathi theatre before making his mark in films. He made his film debut with Gaman in 1978 and gradually emerged as one of the most respected actors in Hindi and Marathi cinema.

Known for his intense screen presence, distinctive voice and forceful dialogue delivery, Patekar successfully portrayed a wide range of characters. His filmography included critically acclaimed performances as well as memorable roles in mainstream commercial cinema.

Among his best-known films are Parinda, Prahaar: The Final Attack, Tirangaa, Krantiveer, Khamoshi: The Musical, Salaam Bombay! and Welcome. His performance in Salaam Bombay! also brought international recognition through Mira Nair’s acclaimed film.

Award-Winning Career

Over a career spanning several decades, Patekar received three National Film Awards along with Filmfare and Maharashtra State honours. He was also awarded the Padma Shri for his contribution to Indian cinema.

His ability to move between serious drama, action, socially relevant cinema and comedy made him a rare and versatile presence in Indian films.

Tributes Pour In

News of Patekar’s death triggered an outpouring of grief across the film industry. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the veteran actor, describing his contribution to Hindi and Marathi cinema as immense and noting that his memorable characters would be remembered for generations.

Actor Akshay Kumar, who worked with Patekar in Welcome and Housefull 5, also expressed his grief, remembering his distinctive voice, intensity and honesty as a performer. Other members of the film fraternity also paid tribute to the veteran actor.

Nana Patekar leaves behind a remarkable body of work that spans theatre, Hindi cinema and Marathi cinema. His unconventional personality, powerful performances and unmistakable dialogue delivery established him as one of the most individualistic actors of his generation.

His passing marks the end of an important chapter in Indian cinema and leaves behind a legacy of performances that continue to resonate with audiences.

Nana Patekar is survived by his wife and son.
