Ahmedabad: AMC stops Demolitions in Fatehwadi due to inadequate police protection

On Monday, Ahmedabad’s much criticised demolition in media, have been stalled in Fatehwadi by AMC as Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation officials say that razing will continue once appropriate police protection is available.

Ahmedabad Municipal commissioner told media that if constructions are not stopped now, they would encourage dodgy builders to erect such illegal apartments and loot gullible people in the area. Similar demolitions were being carried out in the south, east, and west zones of the city. “We will carry out demolitions in a phased manner. We have not touched any building where families are living,” Thara said. “We took photographs of these Fatehwadi apartments several days prior to the demolitions. Apart from three flats, none were occupied.”

Thara went on to say, “We had placed cautionary advertisements requesting people not to invest in these apartments and had issued several notices too, right from the construction stage to the present moment. We had to take this step.”

Sources in the state urban development department are evaluating the bases of which town planning schemes involving dense clusters were rejected. These include town planning schemes that cover areas like Sarkhej, Makarba, Maqdoomnagar, Shahwadi and Vejalpur, and pockets of Saijpur Bogha and Hansol. Town planning schemes of these areas were rejected recently on the grounds that implementing them would lead to large-scale demolitions, spurring law and order problems.
