Tapan Misra, Director SAC, said that SAC is involved in the studies of polar regions for long and the motive of such studies is to combine the satellite data with ground-level observations at Antarctica. “We are including the young students in these projects to kindle the spirit of exploration and develop their curiosity,” he said. As an initiative to boost scientific spirit in India SAC has started including students in different scientific studies. Two Ahmedabad based college students would be inducted in a group involved in 3 year study of Antarctica at the Space Applications Centre (SAC) in ISRO, Ahmedabad. The girls would probably get an opportunity to visit the South Pole as part of their studies on Antarctica. Simone Darji Science student ( with Geology) from MG Science College, is studying the shifts in layers of polar region’s ice cap through a mathematical model. Esha Shah Science student with Physics from School of Sciences, is studying various ice structures such as glaciers, ice shelves, icebergs, etc. at Antarctica. A 7 member team for cryosphere studies including three SAC scientists and four Junior Research Fellows (JRF). Cryosphere pertains to portion of earth’s surface with water in solid form.
