Gandhi Jayanti celebrates 145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi globally

Today, Gandhi Jayanti is a national holiday celebrated in India to as a mark of respect the occasion of the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the “Father of the Nation”. The United Nations General Assembly announced on 15 June 2007 that it adopted a resolution which declared that 2 October will be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, 2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948, was the pre-eminent leader of Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahatma ,applied to him first in 1914 in South Africa,is now used worldwide. He is also called Bapu in India.
