Sanghavi announced that the state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, is set to present a Uniform Civil Code aimed at ensuring equal rights for all women across communities.
Highlighting the significance of the move, he said that even after India gained independence in 1947, personal laws continued to be governed by religion and community-based practices, which, according to him, led to inequalities—particularly affecting women.
He emphasized that the proposed UCC will introduce uniform rules in matters such as marriage and civil affairs, ensuring fairness and equality for women in Gujarat. “This will act as a powerful tool for women’s empowerment,” Sanghavi stated.
Clarifying concerns, the Deputy CM asserted that the UCC is not targeted at any particular religion but is intended to bring uniformity and justice for all citizens. He also noted that Gujarat is set to become one of the few states in India to bring such legislation.
Expressing confidence, Sanghavi said that elected representatives will support the bill in the interest of women—mothers, daughters, and sisters—across their constituencies.
The move is being seen as a major policy step by the Gujarat government toward ensuring gender equality and legal uniformity in personal laws.
