Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Hiren Banker stated that during in the last 10 years, central BJP government has raised petrol prices and imposed heavy taxes, extracting ₹30 lakh crore from the public.
In India Electric Mobility Index, Gujarat ranks 16th in the entire country.
BJP government has failed in implementing policies for electric vehicles, which are considered the best transport alternative for citizens – due to corrupt practices, people have been deprived of benefits.
In the span of 10 years, central BJP government has continuously increased petrol prices – by imposing unbearable taxes, it has collected ₹30 lakh crore from the people of the country.
With inflation skyrocketing and the uncontrolled rise in petrol and diesel prices, citizens of the state are facing severe financial hardships. At a time when electric vehicles have emerged as an excellent alternative for transportation, the government’s failure in providing necessary infrastructure and policy implementation has been exposed.
Despite Gujarat’s tall claims of being a leader in renewable energy, BJP government has completely failed in implementing policies for electric vehicles, which are a better transportation option for citizens. Even after 4 years of announcing the policy, Gujarat’s BJP government has shown how little intent it has – which is now evident in the central government’s report.
Government of India has introduced the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) 2024 to evaluate effective E-Mobility policy and execution. The index includes government policies and initiatives, robust governance processes, public investment, private sector innovation, research and development, EV charging infrastructure development, and advanced technology in the EV sector.
In 2021, Gujarat launched the “Gujarat State Electric Vehicle Policy.” Yet, in the IEMI ranking, Gujarat stands at 16th place nationwide. The index shows Gujarat scoring:
37 in EV purchase and operations promotion (rank 17),
46 in research & development (rank 12),
44 in EV charging infrastructure development (rank 18),
51 in private EV adoption (rank 15),
only 5 in commercial EV adoption (rank 27),
24 in EV charging points (rank 22).
This reveals that in a progressive state like Gujarat, promotion, adoption, and system development of electric vehicles is not even among the top 10 states – exposing how the government is about embracing new systems and improving the environment.
Currently, Gujarat has only 942 electric buses. While 1,75,27,265 electric 2-wheelers are registered nationwide in a year, from 2015–2021, BJP government in Gujarat provided subsidies to only 7,923 students for electric 2-wheelers. Similarly, while 11,67,059 electric 3-wheeler auto rickshaws are registered in India between 2018–2021, Gujarat provided subsidies for only 87 electric 3-wheeler rickshaws.
