Gujarat to Begin House Listing for Census from June 1; Self-Enumeration Option from May 17

Gandhinagar: The Government of Gujarat has announced the commencement of an important phase of the population census process, with a statewide House Listing Operation scheduled from June 1 to June 30, 2026.

During this phase, detailed information about every building, housing unit, and household will be collected. Each family is expected to answer around 33 structured questions, covering key socio-economic and residential details.

Prior to the door-to-door survey, citizens will have the option to self-report their data through the “Self Enumeration” process from May 17 to May 31, 2026. This initiative allows residents to submit their information independently, ensuring accuracy and convenience. The notification regarding this process has been officially published in the Government Gazette by the General Administration Department (Planning).

To ensure smooth execution, the state has initiated extensive preparations. Training programs for officials and staff will be conducted from May 10 to May 15, 2026. Enumerators and supervisors will be trained using modern, technology-driven systems, including mobile applications and the CMMS portal for real-time data collection and monitoring.

At the national level, the operation will be supported by approximately 100 national trainers, 2,000 master trainers, and 44,000 field trainers, who will train lakhs of enumerators across the country.

Financial provisions have also been planned for the operation. The government has allocated ₹10 lakh at the state level, ₹5 lakh at district and municipal levels, and ₹1 lakh at the taluka level. These funds will be used for IT infrastructure, fuel (POL), transportation, and other logistical needs.

A major highlight of this census process is the use of advanced digital technology. Each household will be mapped as a “digital dot” on a geo-referenced platform. This will improve disaster response planning, simplify boundary demarcation, and enhance urban development accuracy.

Additionally, the data collected will provide insights into urbanization trends and migration patterns, aiding long-term planning and policy decisions. Integration with Aadhaar-based geo-tagging is also expected to help refine voter lists by reducing duplication.

Overall, the upcoming census exercise in Gujarat is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening governance, planning, and development strategies across the state.
