Today on 14th January, on the occasion of Uttarayan festival, in Gujarat there is a popular customary to eat Undhiyu and Jalebi. Both the items are sold at most Farsan and sweets shops /outlets in Ahmedabad and across Gujarat.
Many shops have installed big pandals and started pre-cooking and preparing of Undhiyu. On Uttarayan, there will be big queue of people waiting to get Undhiyu and Jalebi and enjoy the treat.
Every year, Gujaratis eat lakhs of rupees of Undhiyu and Jalebi. Making and sell of two eatables gives lot of handy business to Farsan and Sweet shop owners during Uttarayan 20,000 kg of Undhiyu is consumed by Amdavadis on Uttarayan.
The price of Undhiyu remains between Rs 240 to Rs 280 per kg and that of Jalebis made up with ghee from Rs 500 to Rs 540 per kg.
In Ahmedabad alone, it is estimated that there will be at least 400 Undhiyu shops selling an average of 50 kg of the delicacy everyday till 2 pm on January 14. There are around 2,500 sweet shops in Ahmedabad.
