Massive earthquake in Afghanistan: 800 killed and 3000 injured

On 31 August 2025 at around 23:47 AFT (19:17 UTC), a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck in the mountainous border region between Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, near Jalalabad. The quake occurred very close to the surface, at just 8 km depth, intensifying its destructive impact.

The epicenter was pinpointed about 27 km east-northeast of Jalalabad, and tremors were felt in a wide area including Kabul and parts of Pakistan.

Initial reports indicated over 800 people killed and nearly 3,000 injured.

However, the death toll has since risen. As of today, at least 1,400 lives have been lost, with over 3,100 injuries and thousands still trapped under rubble.

Also secondary quake of magnitude 5.5 struck on 2 September, compounding the disaster.
