Ahmedabad, December 8, 2025 — A man accused of raping a mentally challenged woman was shot in the leg by police while attempting to flee during a crime-scene reconstruction, officials said on Monday. The chaos also left a head constable injured. The accused, identified as Moinuddin Badshah (also known as “Badshah” / “Saleem”), was being taken by the crime-branch team to the location of the alleged offence near the city’s Danilimda area for reconstruction. During the reconstruction, Moinuddin suddenly turned violent — he assaulted police personnel and tried to snatch the service revolver of the investigating officer, identified as Imran Ghasura (PI).

In response to this attempt to escape and disarm the officer, the PI opened fire. A bullet hit Moinuddin in the leg. Moinuddin was immediately shifted to Civil Hospital for medical treatment. During the scuffle, Bharatsinh Rathod, a head constable, suffered injuries and was also admitted to the hospital.

According to police, both are out of danger. The accused was arrested recently in connection with a rape case registered at the local police station for allegedly raping a mentally challenged young woman. Police say that after the assault, the accused had repeatedly changed locations before abandoning the victim near her home. CCTV footage and investigative efforts helped police identify and detain him within a few days.

Officials noted that the accused has a long criminal history, with numerous prior FIRs.
The police have registered a fresh case against the accused under relevant sections for assaulting police personnel, attempting to grab a weapon, and trying to escape arrest. A detailed investigation is underway. This incident has once again triggered a broader conversation about the safety of victims and the challenge faced by law-enforcement in handling dangerous criminals — especially during sensitive procedures like crime-scene reconstructions.
