RBI Raises Repo Rate by 25 Basis Points to 5.50%, Signals Focus on Inflation

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has increased the benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points, taking it from 5.25% to 5.50%. The decision marks the central bank’s first repo-rate increase since February 2023 and comes at a time when inflationary pressures and global economic uncertainties are gaining attention.

The decision was taken by the RBI’s six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). Along with the rate increase, the central bank has adopted a more cautious monetary policy approach, reflecting concerns about the inflation outlook.

Inflation Remains a Key Concern

The latest move comes against the backdrop of renewed inflationary pressures. Changes in crude oil prices, geopolitical developments, currency movements and uncertainties in the global economy could influence India’s domestic inflation trajectory.

The RBI has therefore placed greater emphasis on keeping inflation under control while ensuring that economic growth continues to remain resilient.
