Due to heavy rain of Monday, runway of Ahmedabad Airport was washed away and 22 flights were delayed as a result. Last year itself, the runway was newly built. While take off of Ahmedabad to Kochi flight at 11 am ditches were seen on the runway.
As per Airport sources during morning hours only 1794 meter runway was operational which ensued flight delays. Enquiry onto how newly built runway was washed away will be conducted. In October last, runway was built at an expense of Rs 27.55 crores. A stretch of 3.5 kms was resurfaced in 2016.
As per aviation experts longer runways are required during monsoon season else there is a risk of flight getting skid while landing on shorter runway and raising passenger safety concern.
