Counting of votes will take place on the 23rd announced by State Election Commission. Counting of votes in Municipality elections will take place on February 23. Earlier, Gujarat High Court had also rejected an application seeking holding the counting of votes in the local body elections on the same date.
In its reply to High Court, state Election Commission said that no legal or constitutional right of the petitioner is being taken away in the counting of votes on different days, hence the petition of the petitioners was not sustainable. The problems and needs of areas and urban areas are different and hence the questions of rural voters and urban voters are also different.
The petitioners have filed this petition to bring out their political motives. However, the High Court had rejected the petitioner’s plea on the issue. After the High Court rejected the plea, the Congress party has moved Supreme Court on the issue. The apex court has also rejected the petition and given definite answers.
Reacting On the issue, Congress leader Narendra Rawat said, “This is not a blow to the Congress party, it is a blow to democracy. If there are two election results on a different date and there is a gap between the two, the results are affected.”
Expressing displeasure over the Supreme Court’s double standard decision, BJP spokesperson Yamal Vyas said, “Bharatiya Janata Party accepts and welcomes Supreme Court’s decision. However, the BJP never worries about the dates of the result. We are confident the results will be in our favor. ‘
