Women’s Reservation Bill Fails to Pass in Lok Sabha Amid Political Clash

New Delhi: The Women’s Reservation Bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha after a closely contested voting session, triggering sharp political reactions across party lines.

According to voting figures, 298 members voted in favour, while 230 voted against, leading to the bill not securing the required threshold for passage.

The bill, aimed at enhancing women’s representation in Parliament and state legislatures, became a major point of debate between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and opposition parties under the INDIA alliance.

Opposition leaders alleged that the government attempted to bring the bill in a manner that could alter constitutional balance by increasing the number of seats in Parliament and assemblies under the pretext of reservation. They claimed that united opposition resistance led to the bill’s defeat.

At the same time, opposition parties reiterated that a Women’s Reservation law had already been passed in 2023 with broad consensus and demanded its immediate implementation rather than introducing new legislative measures.

The development has intensified the political discourse around women’s representation, constitutional provisions, and the timing and intent behind such legislative efforts.
