After Lok Sabha 2024 election for 26 seats from Gujarat, now political parties are eyeing on state capital Gandhinagar’s Mayor candidate. This seems to be the question on everyone’s minds in the state capital, as the general assembly of GMC Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation prepares to meet. Presently Hitesh Makwana and Premsingh Gol are Mayor and Deputy Mayor since October 2021. On completion of 30-month long term ending by May 2024, names of next likely Mayor candidates could be Anjana Mehta,Ward 1 , Chayya Trivedi, Ward 8 or Shaila Trivedi, Ward 9.
On Makwana assuming office,Mayor post was reserved for Scheduled Caste member for a 2.5 years term. Later it was offered to a woman. Whoever takes Mayor’s post, Ward 3 councillor and previous leader of opposition in GMC Ankit Barot is considered to be favourite as per sources. Barot was one of two Congress councillors with Gajendrasinh Vaghela who left Congress and joined BJP Bharatiya Janata Party just ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha elections, leaving Tushar Parikh of AAP Aam Aadmi Party sole member of opposition. General assembly will also opt for chairman of standing committee and leader of ruling party. GMC was constituted in 2011 by merging Sectors 1 to 30 and 7 nearby villages. 19 villages were added later.
