Meat ban in Mumbai reduced to 2 days during Jain fasting

The meat ban in Mumbai state was reduced from 4 to 2 days today after days of controversy and protests by some political groups, citizens and meat traders. The decision came as a Mumbai court described the ban as regressive.

Mumbai’s civic authorities Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation voted to reduce the ban on the slaughter and sale of meat due to Paryushan Jain festival. The court strongly criticized the ban in Mumbai state and criticised the civic authority. “There is a progressive look to Mumbai. These are regressive steps. We understand the sentiment of people. But purchase is an independent choice,” the court said.
Mumbai meat traders challenged 4 day ban that started yesterday with protests not just by opposition parties but also the ruling BJP’s ally Shiv Sena. The BJP wanted the ban extended to 8 days, but the Sena said it would ensure that meat was openly sold and eaten in the financial capital of nation on the days of the ban. In 1994 ban in Jain fast was introduced in by then Congress government. After 10 years, the 2 day ban was extended to 4 days. The traders said that the ban had never really been implemented until now.
