Prime Minister Narendra Modi created an emotional moment during the swearing-in ceremony of Suvendu Adhikari as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday.
As thousands of BJP supporters cheered at the venue, Modi folded his hands and bowed before the people of Bengal in a “sashtang pranam”-style gesture, thanking the public for giving the BJP a historic mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections. The moment quickly went viral across social media platforms.
Suvendu Adhikari officially took oath as the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal, marking the end of the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule in the state. The ceremony was attended by senior BJP and NDA leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and several Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states.
Another touching moment from the event came when Modi met veteran BJP worker Makhanlal Sarkar. The Prime Minister greeted him warmly, presented him with a shawl and touched his feet as a mark of respect, drawing loud applause from the crowd.
Before the oath ceremony, Modi and Suvendu Adhikari took a round of the Brigade Parade Ground in an open vehicle, waving to supporters gathered in large numbers. Traditional Bengali cultural performances and saffron-themed decorations added to the grand atmosphere of the event.
The BJP’s victory in West Bengal is being seen as a major political milestone, with Suvendu Adhikari becoming the party’s first-ever Chief Minister in the state.
