Voting Begins for Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation Elections; 130 Candidates in the Fray

Gandhinagar: Polling has begun for the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation elections, with 130 candidates contesting 44 seats across 11 wards. The election features candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and independent candidates.

A total of 259,443 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the municipal elections, scheduled for Sunday, October 11, 2026. Vote counting will take place on October 13.

The first two-and-a-half-year term in Gandhinagar is reserved for the Other Backward Classes (OBC), according to the stated reservation arrangement.

BJP Dominated the 2021 Civic Polls

In the 2021 Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation elections, the BJP secured 41 of the 44 seats, while Congress won two seats and AAP secured one seat.

The reported vote shares in the previous election were:

  • BJP: 46.49%
  • Congress: 27.97%
  • AAP: 21.3%

The current election is being closely watched as the BJP, Congress and AAP compete for control of the civic body, alongside independent candidates.

With polling underway and vote counting scheduled for October 13, the results will determine the political composition of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation.
