Massive Tree Plantation Drive Targets Over 1 Crore Saplings Across Gandhinagar Parliamentary Constituency in 2026-27
With a vision to transform the Gandhinagar parliamentary constituency into a model “Green Lok Sabha,” Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has called for a large-scale plantation campaign during 2026-27 aimed at significantly increasing green cover across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar regions.

Chairing a high-level review meeting in Ahmedabad during his Gujarat visit, Amit Shah emphasized that the mission is not merely about planting trees, but about securing clean air, water, and a healthier environment for future generations. The meeting was attended by Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Das, senior government officials, and representatives from multiple departments.

Target of More Than 1 Crore Saplings
Under the ambitious campaign, authorities have set a target of planting over 1.03 crore saplings in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency during 2026-27. This marks a remarkable 64 percent increase compared to the previous year, when approximately 62.85 lakh saplings were planted.

The campaign is being driven under the inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and aligns with the nationwide “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0” initiative aimed at increasing public participation in environmental conservation.
Key Resolutions for ‘Hariali Lok Sabha’
Several strategic initiatives have been planned to ensure widespread plantation and long-term ecological impact:
- Identification of residential societies capable of planting more than 50 trees
- Expansion of green cover across every corner of Ahmedabad
- Plantation along road medians and in open public spaces
- Intensive plantation drives in GIDC industrial areas to provide eco-friendly surroundings for industries and workers
- Public awareness campaigns to encourage mass participation in tree plantation
Amit Shah also stressed the importance of involving citizens directly in the campaign through free sapling distribution. Families residing in tenements, row houses, and bungalows will receive saplings to encourage household-level participation.
Major Role of Government Departments and Civic Bodies
The campaign will witness participation from multiple departments and civic agencies. The Deputy Conservator of Forests, Ahmedabad, will undertake plantation of more than 38.79 lakh saplings, while the Gandhinagar forest division will plant over 12.47 lakh saplings.
Additionally:
- Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will plant around 25 lakh trees
- Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) will plant over 5.42 lakh trees
Authorities noted that the successful outcomes of the 2025-26 plantation drive encouraged the government to scale up this year’s planning significantly.
Miyawaki Forests, Dense Plantation and Green Entry Points
The Forest Department has planned to beautify 18 entry points in Gandhinagar district and 7 entry points in Ahmedabad district by planting nearly 6,000 uniquely identified saplings.
To maximize ecological benefits, the campaign will implement multiple plantation techniques including:
- Miyawaki model forests
- Dense plantation
- Linear plantation
- Boundary plantation
- Scattered plantation
Special focus will be placed on transforming dump sites, vacant government plots, and roadside areas into green zones.
CSR Participation and Railway Plantation Plans
Several institutions and private organizations have pledged support through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, committing to plantation of lakhs of trees across the constituency.
The government is also planning to sign MoUs with railway authorities to undertake plantation drives along railway corridors and surrounding areas.
To boost citizen engagement, the campaign will leverage social media outreach, selfie points, digital awareness drives, and public participation programs.
Green Cover Increased by 11.25% Since 2019
Officials highlighted that sustained plantation efforts led by Amit Shah between 2019 and 2025 have already resulted in an 11.25 percent increase in green cover, equivalent to approximately 2,729 hectares across the Gandhinagar parliamentary constituency.
The government believes that the intensified plantation campaign will further strengthen environmental sustainability while transforming Gandhinagar into a benchmark green parliamentary constituency for the nation.
Apart from the plantation campaign, Amit Shah also reviewed progress on the modernization of the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar Highway, lake conservation and interlinking projects, and development works in municipalities within the Gandhinagar parliamentary constituency.
